Who should use birth control?

Sexually active women who don’t want to become pregnant should consider birth control. Timed pregnancies are important for several reasons; research continues to show that good preconception practices like weight loss, exercise, and nutrition affect the pregnancy and baby’s health. Using effective measures until you’re ready to have a child helps ensure that you are financially, emotionally, and physically ready to have a child. Even older women may need it if they don’t want a later-in-life pregnancy.

What kinds of birth control exist?

Birth control methods fall into four main groups: barrier methods, hormonal methods (including emergency contraception), long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods, and sterilization.

  • Barrier methods include male and female condoms, diaphragms, cervical sponges, spermicides, and cervical caps.
  • Birth control hormones exist as daily oral pills, weekly patches, monthly rings, and a twelve-week recurrent injection.
  • The CDC recommends LARCs, available with or without hormones, for younger women. One popular LARCs is Nexplanon, a small rod inserted in the arm containing progesterone and that lasts three years. Two others are Mirena and KYLEENA, which are seven and five year IUDs that also contain progesterone. There is also a copper IUD, Paragard, which lasts ten years.
  • Sterilization includes vasectomy and tubal ligation.

What’s the best birth control method?

Birth control is not one-size-fits-all. A woman who has difficulty remembering to take a pill may do better with something that is not daily. Women who are concerned about hormones may prefer a barrier method like a condom, diaphragm, or an IUD. Condoms are always recommended to protect against STDs and are a better choice for a woman who is not monogamous. LARCs are a good choice for those who want a consistent form of protection that can last a few years. Sterilization is better for those who don’t wish to have children at all or are finished growing their family.

Does birth control have risks?

Birth control can have risks, the most important of which is the risk of failure. Implants and IUDs have the highest effective rating, while spermicides, when used alone, have the lowest. Pills may decrease the risk of ovarian cancer. Some forms or dosages may affect blood pressure, cause blood clots, or increase migraines. However, many can be used safely and effectively with the guidance of your doctor.

NEXPLANON is a birth control implant that’s placed just under the skin of the inner, non-dominant upper arm.

This flexible implant measures 1.6 inches in length (4 centimeters) and is approximately 2 mm in diameter. A trained healthcare professional will insert the implant into place in your inner non-dominant upper arm.

Once in place, NEXPLANON releases a continuous low dose of hormone to help prevent pregnancy.

Effectiveness rate:

NEXPLANON is just as effective as the pill - without the daily hassle!

This is birth control you don’t have to take every day. The small, flexible implant prevents pregnancy for up to 3 years.*

*NEXPLANON must be removed by the end of the third year.

How NEXPLANON works

NEXPLANON works to prevent pregnancy in several ways.

Once it gets inserted, it releases a steady, low dose of progestin, a hormone that works to prevent pregnancy in 3 ways:

  • Stops ovulation by preventing the release of an egg from the ovary.
  • Thins the lining of your uterus, which makes implantation of the egg more difficult.
  • Thickens mucus in the cervix, which makes it harder for the sperm to reach the egg.

NEXPLANON is inserted during an outpatient office visit

Typical insertion takes a few minutes and is performed under a local anesthetic. In clinical studies, 5.2% of patients felt insertion site pain. NEXPLANON can be removed at any time during the 3-year period.

Possible side effects of NEXPLANON

The most common side effect of NEXPLANON is a change in your normal menstrual bleeding pattern. In studies, 1 in 10 women stopped using NEXPLANON because of an unfavorable change in their bleeding pattern. Besides changes in menstrual bleeding patterns, other frequent side effects that caused women to stop using the implant include mood swings, weight gain, headache, acne, and depressed mood.

Replacing your Implant

While you need to have your NEXPLANON implant removed by the end of the third year, you can also get a new implant inserted in the same removal procedure.  You should have your card at home or with your medical records with the date that the NEXPLANON implant was inserted along with the date that it needs to be removed. Because your NEXPLANON implant must be removed by the end of the third year, it’s important for you to stay on top of your removal date.

Familyfirst Family Medical Practice can remove and replace or just remove your NEXPLANON.  No need to go somewhere else.
